FLEX AUDIO SPEAKERS GUIDE
FLEX AUDIO speakers come in the three most common car sizes: 5.25-inch (FR-5.25, NEO WAVE 5.25, PRO 5.25 Pulse), 6.5-inch (SQL V.D-6.5, FR-6.5, NEO WAVE 6.5, PRO 6.5 Pulse, PRX-6.5, HYBRID 6.5, ZXI COMB 6.5) and 6x9-inch (SQL V.D-6.9, PRX-6.9). All published models are rated at 4 ohms. Measure your door or rear-deck openings, or ask the team, before you order.
Sensitivity (SPL) tells you how loud a speaker plays from the same power. The SQL V.D-6.5 is the most sensitive 6.5-inch model at 98 dB, followed by the SQL V.D-6.9 6x9 at 97 dB and the NEO WAVE 6.5 and FR-5.25 at 96 dB. The FX-15 NEO tweeter is rated at 101 dB.
Rated power runs from 75 W RMS (PRX-6.5) to 300 W RMS (HYBRID 6.5). Popular high-output choices include the SQL V.D-6.9 at 175 W RMS and the SQL V.D-6.5, FR-6.5 and PRO 6.5 Pulse at 150 W RMS. An amplifier that delivers close to a speaker’s RMS rating gets the cleanest, loudest result.
Models with a published response of about 100 Hz to 13 kHz — SQL V.D, FR, PRO Pulse and NEO WAVE — are built to cover the vocals and mid-bass with serious output. Pair them with a tweeter such as the FX-15 NEO for the top end and a subwoofer for the low end. The PRX-6.5, PRX-6.9, ZXI COMB 6.5 and HYBRID 6.5 list responses reaching 20 kHz for a wider range from one speaker.
Neodymium magnets deliver a strong magnetic field from a lighter, more compact motor. In the current lineup the FR-6.5, NEO WAVE 6.5 and FX-15 NEO tweeter use neodymium magnets.
By published sensitivity, the SQL V.D-6.5 is the loudest 6.5-inch FLEX AUDIO speaker at 98 dB, with 150 W RMS (300 W max) power handling at 4 ohms.
The FR-6.5 6.5-inch speaker, the NEO WAVE 6.5 and the FX-15 NEO silk-dome tweeter use neodymium magnets.
For their rated output, yes. A factory head unit typically delivers far less power than these speakers can handle. An amplifier channel matched to the speaker’s RMS rating at 4 ohms lets it play louder and cleaner.
The SQL V.D-6.9 (175 W RMS, 97 dB) and the PRX-6.9 (90 W RMS, 92.5 dB, with a tweeter) are the 6x9-inch models.
